Why I Started The GetPT1st Movement
My name is Sean Hagey. I became a fan of physical therapy when I was just a teenager. When I was 16, I hurt my back while snowboarding. I was absolutely miserable. My physical therapist was able to help get me moving again and get back to being the crazy teenager that I was before I got hurt. Up until that point, I didn’t know anything about PT. I chose to work in the profession largely because of the great experience that I had.
Over the last 10 years, I’ve had the pleasure to help lots of patients get back to the things they love. I have worked in clinics, in nursing homes, and in home health. Along the way, I’ve also met lots of fantastic therapists who are doing great things. I started GetPT1st as both a way to give back to the profession that I love and to shine a light on these great therapists and how they help people.
PTs are unique. There are many specialties in the profession, so they can help in lots of different ways. There is a lot of confusion out there on what PTs do and how they can help. Most people think that physical therapy is only for those who have been injured or are recovering from surgery. It’s true that physical therapists can help with that, but they also can help people who have chronic conditions like COPD, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and heart disease (to name just a few). There is a mountain of research to show how PTs can help in these ways and more.
GetPT1st exists to translate this research into a story format that people without a medical background can understand. This is a true grassroots movement that is built on collaboration and is open to all. I don’t make any money from this as we don’t have any advertising, we don’t sell anything, and we don’t endorse any specific companies, brands, techniques, or products. This whole thing is possible because of help from lots and lots of people who believe in the mission. If you have benefited from working with a PT and have a story to share or would like to be part of the movement, please contact me.
If you’re not already, please follow the GetPT1st accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. If you’re active on social media, check out our free shareable graphics and spread the message. I believe that we’re better when we work together for the greater good.
